The planning, implementation and operation
of a melanopically effective lighting solution
in a workshop for disabled people

Between 2013 and 2016, the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt or DBU) sponsored the construction and subsequent monitoring of a carpentry and production facility to host Isar-Würm-Lech (IWL) workshops for disabled people in the town of Landsberg am Lech.

One of the key factors linked to the sponsorship was the integration of a biologically effective lighting solution, as well as the evaluation of the resulting effects on individuals. The planning of the lighting solution began with the optimisation of the daylight supply inside the building – the human biological reference for the “right light at the right time”.

Thanks to a series of measures, the amount of daylight entering the workshop was increased by 40 per cent. Nevertheless, the daylight in certain areas and at certain times of year (i.e. the winter half-year) was on its own still not enough to reach the target value of 250lx (daylight) vertically at the user's point of sight.

The artificial lighting solution was designed to supplement this lack of light for the user – but only during the morning, when activation and synchronisation are particularly important and when positive effects have been shown by studies to have an influence until the user goes to bed at night.
