General refurbishment of Sonthofen Secondary School

The Gymnasium Sonthofen (secondary school) was built in the 70s in the reinforced concrete skeleton construction method based on the Kasseler model. After the town of Sonthofen ruled that the school would be refurbished, the main objective in this was minimal energy consumption. This study therefore focuses on an analysis of consumption values.

Starting points in this project included efficient lighting, use of daylight with optimum sun protection systems and a bus system with decentral lighting control. The floor space was expanded by a further floor in the building’s classroom wing from 7,800 m2 to 8,800 m2. At the same time, the primary energy consumption decreased from 37.1 kWh/m2a to 17.6 kWh/m2a and energy consumption from 13.7 kWh/m2a to 6.5 kWh/m2a.
